Position: Director of Work-Integrated Learning Research

Karsten is the Director of Work-Integrated Learning Research, WIL Central Unit, Office of the Vice Chancellor, and provides academic oversight of the development of the institutional-wide practice of WIL and enabling WIL research across the institution. Karsten is also the academic lead for the School of Science work placement programme for the BSc(Tech) and MSc(Tech) degrees. His research focus has been on graduate competencies, professional identity development, agentic ethical behaviour, and enabling emerging researchers to conduct publishable research in WIL. Karsten is also on the deputy chair of the University of Waikato WIL Working Group, the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Work-Integrated Learning, Vice-Chair (Oceania) for the WACE International Research Committee, serves on a number of editorial review boards and award panels, and has been a NZACE council member for 15 years. Karsten recently won the Donald MacLaren Academic Award for professional achievement, the Ralph Tyler Award for outstanding research and publication, and the James Wilson Award for outstanding contribution to research.
