Richard started life as a chemist and have a PhD in chemistry from the University of Canterbury. After his chemistry PhD he worked in the Pacific and Caribbean as a chemistry lecturer before returning to NZ and taking up the post of placement coordinator in the School of Science & Technology (now Science & Engineering). He became interested in science education research, and so completed a Doctor of Science Education from Curtin University of Technology. Currently Richard is the Director of Cooperative Education and holds a joint post as deputy dean of the School. He is a member of the World Association for Cooperative Education and is on the WACE Board of Governors, with particular responsibility for research. He founded the Asia-Pacific Journal of Cooperative Education and currently serves as its Editor-in-Chief. Richard also is the recipient of the Tyler Award for research into co-op, the MacLaren award for internationalisation of co-op, and the Wilson Award for contributions to co-op.
